The Difference Between Butt Fusion and Electrofusion Fittings

Butt fusion is the most widely used method for joining medium- to large-diameter HDPE pipes.
In this process, the pipe and fitting ends are heated and then pressed together under controlled temperature and pressure to form a strong, homogeneous joint.

Advantages:

• Best suited for large-diameter and straight pipeline connections.

• Creates strong, uniform joints without the need for additional materials.

• Ideal for both factory fabrication and on-site welding with a butt fusion machine.

Limitations:

• Requires precise alignment and clean pipe ends.

• Not recommended for confined spaces or systems with frequent direction changes.

Electrofusion relies on fittings that contain embedded metal coils. When electric current passes through, the coils generate heat, melting the inner surface of both the pipe and the fitting to create a secure fusion bond.

Advantages:

• Excellent for repair work, tight installation areas, and branch connections.

• Requires less alignment precision compared to butt fusion.

• Compatible with different wall thicknesses and material grades (e.g., PE80 and PE100).

Limitations:

• Fittings are more expensive than butt fusion types.

• Requires a specialized electrofusion control unit for operation.
